Port Ellen Distillery
Diageo announced the reopening of Port Ellen way back in 2017 and fans of the distillery have been waiting excitedly since then. Finally rescheduled for re-opening in 2023, Port Ellen has garnered a cult following that is delighted by the news, and by the knock on impact to the value of vintage bottles on the secondary market.
When Port Ellen closed in 1983 its original stills were lost, which is always going to be the biggest point of contention for Port Ellen drinkers and analysts in the future, how close could the distillate really be? Rumoured to only produce 500,000 litres per year for the first decade of production, Port Ellen will be something to really focus on as people prepare to compare old and new in the next few years.
Scott’s Selection:
The Scott’s Selection series was launched in the 1990s and features whiskies chosen by Robert Scott, the former Speyside distillery manager. The whiskies that are bottled for the series are carefully selected and bottled and cask strength. They are also un-chillfiltered.
