Glenlochy Distillery
Glenlochy was built in Fort William in 1898, shortly after the completion of the West Highland Railway. The railway allowed whisky to be transported from the distillery to Glasgow with ease, which also helped get the whisky mixed into blends. The new distillery operated consistently until production was badly disrupted by the First World War. After a period of closures the distillery was sold to Train & McIntyre, a subsidiary of National Distillers.
During World War II Train & McIntyre sold the distillery to DCL which subsequently modernised the distillery. It was not to last, however, and the distillery was closed in 1983 during the Whisky Loch. It has since been demolished. The only building remaining, which house the maltings and kilns, is now used as residential space.
Douglas Laing:
Douglas Laing is one of very few whisky companies in Scotland that is still family-run; it was founded by Fred Douglas Laing in 1948 and is now under the leadership of Fred Laing and his daughter Cara. It is under this leadership that the company has moved towards bottling single malts in the UK rather than exporting elsewhere. Today, Douglas Laing has bottled whiskies from the likes of Brora, Ardbeg, and Port Ellen.
